Some gentle stretching of their muscles

One important thing you have to consider when you plan your retirement is location. To stay close to their family and friends, many Americans prefer to retire in or near the community they live as opposed to moving to Florida or Arizona. But some states are simply better for retirement.

Retirees are more vulnerable to problems such as higher crime rates or unfavorable weather which can be worse in some places than in others. To rank states, personal finance website MoneyRates looked at 11 different factors across five major categories – senior population, economics, crime, weather, and senior life expectancy.

Based on MoneyRates’ evaluation, here are the 3 worst states in America for retirees in 2014:

3. Tennessee: The state has two big problems that stand out: crime and senior life expectancy. Tennessee has the highest incidence per capita of violent crime in the United States.

2. Louisiana: Louisiana has one of the smallest senior population in the country, with a relatively low life expectancy at age 65. Crime is also a big problem.

1. Alaska: It shouldn’t surprise you that Alaska was the worst rated state for weather. The state rank below average in every category in the study. Some other important problems were its high cost of living and joblessness. Not surprisingly, Alaska has the lowest proportion of 65-or-older people of any state.
